Akosombo Dam

This cool canopy of trees is on the road leading to the highway from Asutsuare. On the way home from Asutsuare we decided to go a little farther north and visit a cousin in Juapong and then go on and tour the Akosombo Dam.

On the way we went though Atimpoku where they have built a huge toll bridge to cross the Volta. Atimpoku across the river.

As we were about to go back across the bridge we had to go through a routine police check point. The police officer asked Tony to show him his fire extinguisher and emergency reflective triangle (two things that you are required to carry and luckily we had purchased a few weeks ago).

When Tony got out of the car they noticed that he was wearing flip flops ("slippers")...the police officer said "it is illegal to drive with slippers in Ghana". He said that he could take Tony in and fix a court date...or maybe he would like to treat 3 officers to a soda.

After much discussion Tony was sent to the roadside where a woman was selling coke and he bought 5 bottles of soda and we were once again on our way.

The Akosombo Dam was built on the Volta River and created the largest man made lake in the world, Lake Volta.

There were huge whirlpools by the intake...

Charity Oliver and Emilia listening to the tour guide...

A fisherman was trying his luck very close to the intake...scary...

The dam was built with natural materials...

Where they generate the hydro electric power... This ferry is a rather lame attempt at tourism...they charge a fair amount for a ferry ride across the lake to an island that doesn't have much to offer...they are trying I suppose.

The family on top of the dam...

  1. What a coincidence, one of Glen's bosses was just at the reservoir last week, too!

    Enjoying the blog.

Hope to catch up with you next week.
